Grasshopper extension call forwarding
Use the number assigned in Phone. See the placeholder guide before entering a code. Availability and charges depend on your service and plan.
Confirm your product
Section titled “Confirm your product”These steps apply only to Grasshopper extension. If this is not your phone product, choose Other or ask your provider.
An admin can edit every extension; a user can edit only their own. True Solo accounts allow one forwarding number per extension, so forwarding when you don’t pick up or after hours, which need both your phone and your Xaller.ai number, require a plan with more forwarding numbers. Always choose “Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up” for the Xaller.ai number.
Activate your receptionist in Xaller.ai before turning on forwarding. Your existing line does not connect automatically.
Procedure reviewed: 2026-10-13. Live carrier test: not performed. A source review is not proof that this procedure works on every plan.
Forward all calls
Section titled “Forward all calls”- Sign in to the Grasshopper admin portal, select Extensions, then Edit next to the extension your business number reaches, and select Add a forwarding number.
- Enter your Xaller.ai number. Under “How should Grasshopper handle calls to this number?”, choose “Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up”. Choose 24/7 and select Add this number. Code or destination:
{number}. - Select Off next to the extension’s other forwarding numbers so only your receptionist rings, then save.
Turn it off
Section titled “Turn it off”- Select Off next to your Xaller.ai number and turn your previous forwarding numbers back on. If every forwarding number is off, calls go to Grasshopper voicemail.
Test this setting
Section titled “Test this setting”Call your business number from a different phone. Your receptionist should answer straight away, with no announcement or “press 1” prompt.
Forward when we don’t pick up
Section titled “Forward when we don’t pick up”- In the extension’s settings, select Add a forwarding number and enter your Xaller.ai number. Choose “Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up” and 24/7, then select Add this number. Code or destination:
{number}. - Keep your own phones above your Xaller.ai number in the list.
- Under the forwarding numbers, select Options, choose “In order, just once” and save.
Turn it off
Section titled “Turn it off”- Select Off next to your Xaller.ai number. Missed calls go to Grasshopper voicemail again.
Test this setting
Section titled “Test this setting”Call your business number from a different phone and let your own phones ring out. Your receptionist should answer next.
Forward after hours
Section titled “Forward after hours”- Check that your account and extension hours stay open whenever your receptionist should answer. When an account or extension schedule is closed, callers hear the away greeting instead of being forwarded.
- In the extension’s settings, add your Xaller.ai number with “Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up”. Under “When do you want this number to receive calls?”, choose Custom Schedule and set your closed hours. Code or destination:
{number}. - Set your staff forwarding numbers to your opening hours and save.
Turn it off
Section titled “Turn it off”- Select Off next to your Xaller.ai number, or remove its schedule, and save.
Test this setting
Section titled “Test this setting”Call your business number from a different phone during your closed hours. Your receptionist should answer. Call again during opening hours to check your team’s phones ring.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- Your receptionist hears an announcement or the caller hears “press 1 to accept”? Edit the Xaller.ai forwarding number and choose “Calls will connect to you as soon as you pick up”.
- Callers hear your away greeting? Your account or extension schedule is closed; keep it open for the hours your receptionist should answer.
- Calls go straight to voicemail? At least one forwarding number must be on for the extension.
Confirm your setup
Section titled “Confirm your setup”Call from another phone. Check that your receptionist answers, the call appears in Calls, and your expected notification arrives. Test busy and no-answer behavior separately. If anything fails, turn forwarding off and troubleshoot the route.
Test in Xaller.ai
Section titled “Test in Xaller.ai”Return to Phone, start a five-minute check and call your existing business number from a separate phone. Do not dial the assigned destination for this check. Let the selected condition happen, listen for your receptionist, say a few words and hang up. Confirm the matching call only if it was your test and it worked. An arrival alone is not success. No-answer and busy each need their own test; after-hours needs the phone-service schedule and time zone.
Tested with you records this one test, not continuous carrier verification. If it fails, check the product, destination, permissions and condition, or restore previous handling using the undo steps above.
With direct connect, calls your receptionist doesn’t take are not sent back to Grasshopper voicemail. Announced or screened calls ask whoever answers to press 1, which your receptionist will not do. Never enter your Grasshopper business number as a forwarding number; it creates a loop.
Pausing Xaller.ai does not turn off carrier forwarding. To restore previous handling, change the settings at your phone provider.
Return to Phone — your saved setup is retained when you sign in. No phone number is included in this link.
